The sun... we love it!

The sun... we love it!

We love the sun, especially for our morale but also for its essential role in bone calcification, but we can never repeat it enough: in summer as in winter, we must protect ourselves from it. With the multitude of suncare products available on the market, how do you choose? We explain it all to you.

Should I put on sun cream? Why should you?

Your best ally against the sun's harmful effects is sun protection. But how exactly does it work?

UV rays can be divided into three types:

- Ultraviolet A, also known as UV. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and can cause damage such as burns, wrinkles, skin spots, brown skin, pre-cancerous skin lesions and skin cancers.

- Ultraviolet B or UVB damages the surface layer of the skin, causing burns and cancers.

- Infrared, whose wavelength is much longer than that of UV, reaches the deepest layers of the skin. There they produce large quantities of free radicals, which can damage DNA, alter the functioning of cells and cause accelerated ageing

It is therefore essential to protect oneself from the entire solar spectrum, i.e. UVA, UVB and infrared rays, from a very young age. Indeed, prevention begins in childhood, as the main risk factor for skin cancer is overexposure to the sun without protection before the age of 15. In fact, five serious sunburns before adulthood increases the risk of developing melanoma, a skin cancer, by 80%.

So we protect our toddlers for their own good!

Now that you've found the sun product that will accompany you this summer, a few simple rules to remember:

- Avoid exposure to the hottest hours of the day, i.e. between midday and 4pm

- For children, wear anti-UV clothing, a hat and cap, and don't forget sunglasses.

- Reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours and after each swim

Your complexion will be tanned but well protected!

But what are the rules for proper sun protection? Before talking about creams, you should first of all follow a few simple rules: don't expose yourself to the sun at the hottest times of the day (between midday and 3 and 4 pm), put on a T-shirt for children at the beach and a cap, without forgetting sunglasses, because UV rays can also damage the eyes, especially those of children.

The sun is an ally in staying healthy.

Its role in the calcification of bones and its positive effects on our morale make it essential to our lives. But it is also our best friend and our worst enemy. With it, it's all a question of dosage and of course protection!

The sun in small doses remains good for your health. So there is no question of banning all exposure, it is simply a question of protecting yourself. This is particularly true for children. Their skin is not mature until they are 9 or 10 years old, and although they have fewer defences than adults, they are more exposed to the sun: "It is estimated that 50 to 60% of the UV doses taken in life are taken during childhood," explains Professor Christophe Bedane, dermatologist.

Protecting yourself from the sun is important. In theory. Because in practice, we are often wrong: we expose ourselves at the hottest times of the day, we don't put on a sunscreen product every two hours.
